Season One: Structure

Following Season 0.5: Foundations, Structure is the theme of the not-really-first season of Can’t Unread.

In fall of 2023, we’ll talk all about organization, hierarchy, and making or breaking the rules. We’re interested in the seen and unseen scaffolding of minds, programs, and societies. We want to know how guidelines help and harm us, why we sometimes need to think inside the box, and how different kinds of structure create (the appearance of?) safety. There’s a lot of wiggle-room within Structure, so if you’re interested in being a guest, feel free to suggest any article you see fit here. That said, here are some topic suggestions:

Things I sort of know about (for a more discussion-style episode)

  • How we structure our daily lives: Routines, habits, etc

  • Organizational structures: In corporations, in government, etc.

  • Related: Is bureaucracy ever good?

  • Power structures and systemic discrimination

  • How our propensity for structure and meaning influence how we see our lives: E.g. narrative identity

  • Structure- and/or certainty-driven conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder

  • Language and the structure of communication

Things I am interested in but don’t know about (for a more interview-style episode)

  • Anything related to the more literal structures of the world: Architecture, structure and
    patterns in nature, etc.

  • Structures of the universe™, i.e. laws of physics

  • Data structures & information processing

  • …Lots of other things, probably
